192981_1722493136949_1076966933_31820876_3651232_o[1]Monte is comprised of adults and youth from Belhar, Delft, Ravensmead, Parow, Bishop Lavis, Nooitgedacht, Mitchells Plain, Montevideo, Montana, Charlesville, Athlone and Gugulethu.

This crew embodies the rich cultural diversity that is representative of Cape Town and South Africa. While the roots of Monte Dragons is vested in the primary school Montevideo where the team started out as grade 7 learners and paddlers, our spirit of teamwork, camaraderie, and strong desire to compete is what makes Monte so special. The team has a unique bond of educators and their learners paddling side by side.

Every member of Monte Dragons has continuously improved and grown as a paddler, getting stronger and more technically experienced. This has resulted in Monte Dragons, as a team, experiencing greater success. The turning point came during the Western Cape Dragon Boat Association League 2009 where Monte Dragons successfully snatched the League Championship from rival crews. The team has since defended its Mixed Crew and Menís crew Championships during 2010 and 2011 season.

Eight members of Monte Dragons were selected to represent South Africa at the International Dragon Boat Federations World Championships held in Prague, Czech Republic during August 2009. A significant mile stone in the clubs history is the Monte Dragons coach was selected to captain the South African National Dragon Boat crew at the World Championships during 2009.

Monte Dragons has broken both National (Latter) and Provincial 1000m Mixed Crew and 2000m records during 2011 season. With this victory our team realized our true potential and so began a new journey, to earn the right to represent South Africa at the Club Crew World Championships in Hong Kong during July 2012.

The team is committed to a more physical training regiment as well as expert technical coaching from the South African National coach. With this experience and combined with our strong values of teamwork we were able to win a berth for the 2012 Club Crew World Championships in Hong Kong.

History of Monte Dragons

Monte Dragons has its roots at Montevideo Primary where learners were introduced to the exciting Chinese sport and it's traditions of Dragon Boat Racing during October 2004. The learners who hailed from Montana, Valhalla Park, Bishop Lavis, Nooitgedacht, Belhar, Delft and Gugulethu, were introduced to this sport to broaden their horizons and to inculcate vital life skills such as discipline, good self-esteem, physical fitness, team-work and loyalty.
The club and its crew soon outgrew their humble beginnings and with many of the squad moving onto high school the learners could no longer compete under the schoolís name and Monte Dragons Dragon Boat Club was born in January 2006. Since its humble beginnings Monte Dragons has grown to become a formidable force in the Cape waters and have scooped up title after title in the Western Cape League competition every year. The club still has strong ties to Montevideo primary as well as the surrounding High Schools with many of the learners paddling in the acclaimed red and white colours of Monte.

Senior paddlers joined the club in February 2008 and the last three years has seen the club truly blossom from strength to strength claiming title wins in the Mixed and Open categories for three years in a row in the Western Cape league and boasting 8 paddlers selected for the provincial and national teams.
